Practical Steps for Sleeping More Soundly
Get regular exercise during the day. In addition to being necessary to keep your body healthy, getting regular exercise each day helps you sleep better at night. Your body naturally needs more rest when its been physically active than when you've been sedentary. You should work out early in the day, though, not late at night. Exercise pumps you up, gives you energy and enthusiasm and all of those things contradict your needing to relax and decompress to fall asleep. Ask an expert such as a personal trainer or a physician if you need help at putting together a good workout to promote sleep -and any other physical goals you might have.
Sometimes increasing your physical comfort can make all the difference when it comes to sleeping.
Don't wear clothing that's tight or that constrains you in any way; other than that, just wear what's most comfortable for you. Some people have trouble sleeping because they have the wrong style of mattress for their needs; consider getting a higher quality one if necessary. Is the room you sleep in too warm or chilly? It's easy to overlook one or more of these details, as you may have gotten used to being uncomfortable in some manner or other. You don't want to have to overcome uncomfortable conditions when you're going to bed every night.
Thirdly, if all else fails, simply let yourself arise and go into another room for a while. Leave the bedroom altogether. It's just too frustrating to lay there and not be able to get to sleep. The stress that will result from all this restlessness could possibly impact your life more than a sleepless night. And it certainly won't help you get to sleep any faster. Give it half an hour. If you're still staring at the ceiling counting sheep, get up for a short time. Find something relaxing to do in another room - with soft lighting and maybe soft music - and see if that helps. Some suggestions would be to read something pleasant or just relax and meditate. The fourth thing you can do - and this is very important - is to realize that this will pass. There are a lot of steps that you can take to increase your chances of falling and staying asleep each night. Most of these are home or folk remedies but if they don't work, talk to your doctor. Your health care practitioner should be able to determine the root cause behind your inability to sleep and may prescribe a medication to help you. No matter what the outcome, keep searching and you will eventually find the solution that makes your sleepless nights a thing of the past.
